Spider veins are a common beauty woe. In fact, spider veins -- those dilated capillaries on the skin that resemble spider web patterns -- affect up to 50% of the adult population, especially women. These small, pronounced vessels usually appear on the legs and can be purple, red or blue in color. Unlike varicose veins, spider veins are not raised. For most people spider veins are primarily a cosmetic issue, although they can develop into varicose veins over time.

Spider veins can be caused by:

  • Pregnancy
  • Weight fluctuation

Underlying issues that may accompany spider veins:

  • Heavy legs
